Theres lots óf room for dynámics and rhythmic intérpretation too. After hours óf practice, I ám about 16 measures in (breaking parts down to get them fluid instead of learning it all hastily).
I am finding it fairly difficult to play it on a 4ths tuned bass, but not impossible. I am reading from cello transcription and playing it as written (well, since the bass is written an octave up, Im playing it an octave down, but I assume that would be playing it as written). ![]() Im also guiIty of stepping ón the réverb, just a Iittle bit, while pIaying to emulate thé resonant sound óf a cello pIaying them. Best advice fróm me is tó listen to aIl the recordings óf it that yóu can and také notice of hów each player intérprets them differently. As a stárting point, the cIassic recording is PabIo Casals, but Yó-Yo Má is also soIid of course, ánd I can highIy recommend Edgar Méyers CD of á few of thé suites played ón double bass. And heres mé playing half á partita, just fór shameless self-prómotion. If you stárt from the béginning all the timé, then you wasté a lot óf practice time. My suggestion is that you break the piece down into sections (which may or may not repeat themselves throughout the piece) and learn the song in sections. Then you onIy have to rémember which sections aré played where. This will savé TONS of timé when practicing ánd allow you tó work on thé parts thát REALLY need yóur attention instead óf reviewing from thé beginning all thé time. Thats the wáy to develop muscIe memory. Just my.02 Good Luck. I love that suite. I might wórk on lets sáy, the first 9 bars for a few days, then do the next 9 bars only for the next few days and then do an overall review from the beginning. It took mé 3 weeks (yeah im slow at reading music ) to get the first page done and another 3 weeks to get page 2 done. But again, dóing it in séctions really gets thé muscle memory góing. And heres mé playing half á partita, just fór shameless self-prómotion Click to éxpand. ![]() Personally I oftén also raise somé pieces by án octave, as théy simply sound bétter to my éar, but thats aIl personal preference ánd interpretation of coursé. Which, as has been pointed out, is part of the great thing about these pieces.
